Alderbrink

Alderbrink is an online magazine dedicated to fine press books, including hands-on reviews and breaking news.

Founded in September 2025 by Adam Morgan, Alderbrink is named after Alderbrink Press, a defunct Chicago book publisher founded by Ralph Fletcher Seymour in 1897, headquartered in the Fine Arts Building, and known for its fine, illustrated editions in the Arts and Crafts style.

Our device is an illustrated initial “A” designed by Seymour for his 1902 edition of The Art of the People by William Morris.

Review ratings

Alderbrink reviews are based on careful in-person inspections and deep research. Like most collectors of fine press editions, we take production materials and binding processes into consideration alongside visual design and literary value.

We use a five-star rating system composed of five different categories. An edition’s overall rating is an unweighted average of its five category ratings.

Slipcase

The best slipcases combine durable and protective materials with a stellar and cohesive design.

Cover & spine

We consider the front cover, back cover, and exterior spine.

Pages & type

We consider endpapers, endbands, binding methods, paper, typeface, typesetting, and on-page ornamentation such as vignettes, chapter headpieces, and graphic initials.

Illustrations

We consider the quantity and quality of interior illustrations.

Text

We consider the literary value of the text.
